The main university in Byron is the University of Western Ontario, later rebranded as Western University, a member of U15 which is comprised of research-intensive universities in Canada. Founded in 1878 by Bishop Isaac Hellmuth, this university is not only famous for its history but also its roots in arts, divinity, law, and medicine. Western is located east
of Medway Valley Heritage Forest; surrounded by residential neighbourhoods and the Thames River bisecting the campus' eastern portion. The university operates twelve academic faculties and schools. Western is a co-educational university, with more than 30,000 students, and with over 300,000 living alumni worldwide. The campus is stunning; boasting older style buildings that give the campus an elite and dignified look. Western strives to create a diverse, welcoming community on its campus and is home to more than 4,000 international students from over 120 different countries. Students at Western care not only about improving the campus community but also about having a meaningful impact worldwide and the university places a heavy focus on environmentalism and global awareness.
Wickerson Hills is located near a number of parks, with areas for outdoor exercise and playgrounds for families. Byron is home to Springbank Park, the largest urban park in London, Ontario. Summercrest park includes a playground and swing set while the Byron Optometrist Sports Complex, just minutes away off of Boler Road, is home to three soccer fields, three baseball diamonds, and an additional children's playground. Byron is situated along the Thames River
which provides an abundance of natural landscape for families to enjoy and is surrounded by many pathways for cyclists, joggers and those on a relaxing stroll. If you’re interested in an extended adventure, Komoka Provincial Park offers longer hiking trails and campgrounds.
The magically-themed Storybook Gardens are a unique spot to visit in Byron that offers families the chance to bond, along with a delightful cast of knights and princesses. Kids will find themselves partaking in mini-adventures through small villages or making a splash in the water parks. Climbing walls and water slides are open to all ages and on the weekend, families often also go to the Dwarf Tree Orchard where they can pick the finest apples Byron has to offer. There’s no limit to the amount of family fun that can be had near Wickerson Hills.

Byron is also home to Boler Mountain, a small co-operative formerly known as the London Ski Club that offers skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing. When there’s no snow to be found in the summer, Boler Mountain is filled with mountain bikers, hikers, zip-liners, and beach-goers. After the 2012 expansion, Boler has 3 chairlifts, a magic carpet and a tube carpet serving 16 trails. This is an excellent spot for children to learn how to ski or snowboard in a safe environment that everyone in the family can enjoy.
The city of London is home to twenty-one Environmentally Significant Areas (ESAs) and has been recognized as a Conservation Hero with the Lee Symmes Municipal Award, bestowed by Ontario Nature. The ESAs are seen as integral to London’s Natural Heritage System, existing within both urban and agricultural settings and inclusive of wetlands, woodlands, meadows, river corridors and significant wildlife habitats. On Wickerson Hills’ doorstep is the ESA or Warbler Woods, named for the rarely-sighted Golden-winged Warbler that once nested in the upland deciduous forest.
The forest’s north and south-facing slopes boast a diverse flora of over 250 species of trees and flowering plants, including White and Red Oaks, Sugar Maple, Butternut, Black Cherry and White Pine. The moist ravines play host to many species of ferns, horsetails and club mosses that thrive beneath Red Maple, Basswood and White Birch. In the springtime, the higher ground is covered with Bloodroot, Sharp-lobed Hepatica, White and Red Trillium and Wild Geranium to name a few.
The Warbler Woods is a fantastic area for bird watching, especially during the spring and fall migration seasons, with the Indigo Bunting, Great Crested Flycatcher, Wood Thrush and Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers all making their homes in the forest. Animal-life is fairly typical of the area, with local species including the Grey Squirrel, Raccoon, Woodchuck, White-tailed Deer, Red Fox and Eastern

Chipmunk. Three species of salamander have been recorded alongside the American Toad, Gray Treefrog, Eastern Gartersnake and Dekay’s Brownsnake.
An archaeological survey of the area uncovered the remnants of a pre-seventeenth century Neutral Indian summer camp, along with artifacts suggesting the woods were once used for both hunting and fishing. The publically-owned lands, situated between Commissioners Road and Byron Baseline Road, cover twenty-nine hectares and form a natural corridor that extends continuously north to the Kains Woods ESA.
The Thames River itself is also home to a variety of wildlife and fish, including many that are rarely found anywhere else in Canada, such as the Eastern Spiny Softshell Turtle, Queen Snake, and Virginia Opossum. In the Thames’ lakes, it is possible to find Perch, Bass and the Northern Pike.

Just a short drive from Wickerson Hills lies the main shopping ground of this vibrant community, The Byron Village Plaza. Retaining the area’s small-town character with its own Downtown core, the Plaza offers great restaurants and stores to cover all of your convenience needs. You’ll find a large Metro grocery store, a Rexall pharmacy, LCBO, and Petvalu. There’s a chiropractor, dentist, orthodontist and medical clinic to cater for your health requirements, as well as a nail salon and hairdresser. For your banking needs, the area features branches of RBC Bank, BMO Bank of Montreal and TD Canada Trust. In addition, not far from the Byron Village Plaza is the Byron Branch of the London Library, which not only houses thousands of books but also puts on live musical performances and events for special occasions.
Only fifteen minutes away is the two-storey White Oaks Mall, located at the southwest corner of Wellington Road and Bradley Avenue, just north of Highway 401. Built in 1962 and bought by Bentall Kennedy in 2013, the shopping center has over 185 stores and services available, including a cinema. For fashion-lovers, there's an American Eagle, H&M, and GAP among the 40+ clothing outlets, with Pandora and Swarovski for jewelry. The extensive food-hall has everything from Taco Bell and Subway to Thai Express and Mac's Sushi and the Mall is also home to a Walmart and a Hudson’s Bay department store. White Oaks is serviced by a number of bus routes operated by the London Transit Commission and is expected to be the southern terminus of one route on the planned London Rapid Transit System.
The immediate Byron neighbourhood has plenty of options when it comes to eating out, whatever your taste. On the corner of Boler Road and Southdale Rd West, you'll find Porcino, an authentic Italian bistro serving up delicious food in a warm atmosphere along with an extensive selection of wines. Head north to Byron Baseline Road and you’ll discover
the family favourite, Bernie's Bar & Grill, next door to one of the area's best-loved Chinese outlets; Chinatown Restaurant. A stone’s throw away on Commissioners Road West is the local Starbucks, Tim Hortons, Meesai Thai Kitchen, Golden Dragon Restaurant and Shawarma House. This locale is also the home to the Byron Freehouse – a unique and exciting gastropub that offers quality local dishes while boasting an award-winning wine list, over twenty beers on tap and fridges full of local, regional and international craft brews.
No matter your denomination, there are numerous community-minded churches offering religious services in Byron. Commissioners Road West is home to both St. Anne’s Anglican Church and St. George’s Roman Catholic Parish. Nearby, on Boler Road, are the Byron United Church and the Byron Community Church. Across the river on Riverside Drive is the local Church of the Latter-Day Saints and in the nearby suburb of Westmount, you'll find the Westmount Baptist Church and the Westmount Presbyterian Church.
