In recent years, London’s Old South has become one of the trendiest areas to live in the city. All that and more is true of Wortley Village, a smaller section of the “Old South” marked by Wortley Road and separated from downtown London by the Thames River. In honour of its planning, community, and personality, Wortley Village won the Great Places in Canada competition in 2013.
Wortley Village began as one of London’s earliest “suburbs” in the 1850s, populated by people who wanted to be near the core but not within. Later, in 1890, it was annexed into the City of London. Many of the large stately homes and manors were built with the initial suburb in the 1800s and as a result, there are a variety of heritage homes in the neighbourhood. Wortley Village continued to develop into the 1900s and there are several homes from this period as well. The newest developments include apartments and townhouse-style condos.
The Village has Wortley Road Public School right on its namesake road. Depending on zoning, families in Wortley Village might also send their elementary age children to Victoria Public School. For high school, all students attend London South Collegiate Institute. In the Catholic Board, students attend St. Martin in Wortley for elementary grades and Catholic Central High for secondary grades. French Immersion programs are offered by Lord Roberts Public School, Louise Arbour Public School, Sir Frederick Banting Secondary School, St. Anthony, and Mother Teresa Secondary.
Part of Wortley’s timeless charm is how walkable it is. The Village is lined with old trees, beautiful heritage sights, and well-maintained parks. Even walking through the village for errands becomes a treat for the eyes. Services in the village include shops, cafes, groceries, pubs, pharmacies, YMCA Child Care, and a branch of the London Public Library. Extending the walk across the Thames River can take residents into the downtown core of London with even more options for activities, shopping, and services.
