Central Elgin Collegiate Institute is one of the largest public secondary schools in the St. Thomas area.
It’s well-known for its excellent academics, music programme and sports programme, and offers interested students a chance to take advanced academic programmes if they really want to challenge themselves. Central Elgin offers a specialised Enrichment Program for students that want to push their academics to more challenging levels and earn increased recognition for their work. This program pushes students to tackle a more demanding course load and it helps prepare them for the rigors of postsecondary school. The Central Elgin math team managed to take the championships in 2015 as well, showcasing how strong the academic program is at the school.
Central Elgin Collegiate Institute is known for having a very strong athletic programme. It features very successful men’s basketball and volleyball teams. The school also has a powerful tennis programme for both men and women. Central Elgin also features a wrestling team and a women’s soccer team.
The Central Elgin Varsity Boy’s Hockey team has seen success in the WOSSAA in the past. The Girls soccer team has taken the WOSSAA championship in the past, and the Varsity Boys Football team were TVRAA South East Champions and held an undefeated season in 2012.
Central Elgin really emphasises its music programme and has a Grade 9 Band as well as a Choir, a Senior Wind Ensemble, and a Jazz Band. Students interested in music will enjoy a great deal of high-quality training during their years at Central Elgin Collegiate Institute. The school was also home to successful actress Rachel McAdams, a member of the Central Elgin Wall of Fame.
Central Elgin Collegiate Institute is part of the Thames Valley District School Board. It’s located at 201 Chestnut Street in St. Thomas and offers spots to about 750 students in grades 9-12 each year.
