Life In Rodney, Ontario
Rodney, Ontario is a municipality located within the municipality of West Elgin. A quintessential town with a population of approximately 998 residents. Just 15 minutes from Lake Erie, Rodney is everything you would think of when picturing small-town Ontario.
Rodney has undergone a few name changes in its time. Originally named Stewart’s Mill after the owner of the first sawmill in the area, it was then changed to Centreville in 1840 due to its location. After 1865 it was renamed once again, to Rodney after British Naval Officer, George Brydges Rodney.
Though relatively remote there are a few communities that surround Rodney, such as West Lorne, Wardsville, Duart, and Clearville. Larger cities are a short drive away. St. Thomas and London, Ontario are both under an hours drive and with the 401 being conveniently located only 10 minutes outside of town, travel is quick.
The town has a number of different amenities for residents. The LCBO/Beer store, Canada Post, bank, Airport and Community Centre are available for to those who live in and surrounding Rodney. There is also a community pool that opens in June allowing residents to take swimming lessons and cool off on those hot summer days.
There is a branch of the Elgin Country Libraries located within Rodney as well. This branch offers programs throughout the year for residents to participate in. There are craft activities and an after school club as well.
Just down the road, is the Port Glasgow yacht club and marina. This 80 slip facility offers 3 launch ramps, food booth, a bait & tackle shop and public restrooms and showers. There are a number of trails and beach access as well. They also host family friendly activities such as beach days, children’s fishing for free and delicious fish frys.
The Port Glasgow beach fly’s the blue flag which is one of only 27 beaches in Canada to do so. The Blue Flag ensures that the beach meets certain standards for safety, accessibility and cleanliness.
There are a number of local restaurants where you are bound to run into a neighbour. Shannon’s Country Diner, Take A Bite Food Truck, Twisted Toppings, Sunnyside Restaurant, Ethel's Ice Cream & Soda Shop and Back Alley Snack Shack are well loved and frequented spots in Rodney.
Rodney is also home to Ontario’s smallest jail, measuring in at 4.5 metres by 5.4 metres. Now serving as a part-time tourist information centre.
Rodney may be a small, drive-by, type of town, however for those who call it home there is a strong sense of community and deep love for rural Ontario.
